Cow Island Campout

Cow Island resides 3 miles off the coast of Portland in Casco Bay, just north of Great Diamond Island. We heard about the public camping available on its western shore and decided to check it out. We loaded up the boats for a short overnight excursion after work and headed out to take advantage of the nice weather.

Landing on Cow Island.

When we landed, we explored our options for sites and found there were only a few on the small island and they were not too well maintained.

Moose walking the island's short path up and down its western shore.

Decorative buoy trees, a common method of recycling lost lobster buoys in Casco Bay.

We chose our site and set up before the sun went down. It was our first time camping since leaving the Appalachian Trail and we were happy to be back in action.

Back at camp! Our first time in the tent since the trail.

We enjoyed the lovely sunset before hitting the hay.

The next morning we woke up early to go back to the main land. We had the seas to ourselves as we paddled back to Portland. After packing up the boats on the car, we grabbed breakfast and headed to work. This was a successful and short overnight to one of Casco Bay's many island getaways.
